Ravel Violin Concerto
An orchestration of Ravel's G major Violin Sonata as a concertino for violin and small chamber orchestra.
Ravel wrote two piano concerti, his only offerings in the concerto genre. It is known that he had at least for a moment the intention of writing a violin concerto as evidenced by his correspondence with violinist Hélène Jourdan-Morhange. Though this venture never came to fruition, the creation of his G major Violin Sonata nevertheless gives us a glimpse of Ravel's manner of using the violin in a manner beyond the purely virtuosic role of his well known work Tzigane. In the Violin Sonata, Ravel weaves a highly intricate dialogue between the piano and violin, bringing their individual natures both in compliment and contrast with each other, creating a richly colorful sonic experience.
The textures and musical idioms which he uses throughout the Sonata allude to various musical cultures, from his concept of American jazz to renaissance counterpoint.
In many ways it alludes to his own music, as in particular to his G major Piano Concerto. Certainly, the temporal proximity of their writing may have contributed to many striking similarities between them. Their influence of American jazz, their key, and the resemblance of their final movements in terms of their motoric qualities among other aspects inspired me to embark on this orchestration project, which draws upon Ravel's own orchestrations such as that found in L'Enfant et les Sortileges, both piano concerti, and "Une Barque sur l'Ocean".
